The Visitors Centre at Caramanico has a small museum and an otter-breeding centre, and can issue you with a permit to walk in the Orfento Gorge (highly recommended). They also hire out mountain bikes.
Behind the village of Decontra, you can find a remarkable two-storey tholos (stone beehive-shaped shepherd’s hut) and the medieval hermitage of San Bartolomeo, built almost invisibly into the cliffside of a steep gorge.
You could also explore the nearby Botanic Garden at Sant’Eufemia, or the great Hermitage of Santo Spirito, a National Monument.
An hour’s drive away, the lovely town of Sulmona has medieval buildings, street cafes, churches and museums (market days Wed & Sat) and is the home of sugared almonds or confetti, while Chieti has an impressive National Archeological Museum.
You could walk to the top of Monte Amaro (2793m), or simply enjoy leisurely picnics in the meadows around Decontra, surrounded by magnificent views. |
